About Norwegian Forest Cats

At the start of the 20th century, Norwegian Forest Cats were very rare, almost to the point of extinction. A special breeding program was put into place in the 70's in Norway to stop the breed from extinction. The late King Olaf called the Norwegian Forest Cat the official cat of Norway. Wegies didn't begin breeding in the US until the late 1970's.

Once a companion to the Vikings, the Norwegian Forest Cat is designed to live in very cold climates. Their fur is thick and their bodies are strong. They are known for climbing up and down trees in their native homeland. The Norwegian Forest Cat even has a place in Norse mythology. The goddess Freya was supposedly pulled in a chariot by two large cats. They may have even set foot in North America during the late 9th century.

The Norwegian Forest is a highly intellegiant cat who is known for adapting to new enviornments quickly. They are often recognized by their brown tabby and white coats, but can actually be any color. They are known for their mild temperments and friendly mannerisms. They love playing with toys, especially laser lights or other sources of moving light. They tend to follow their owner around and enjoy being where the action is.
